Press Release by the Federal Public Prosecutor’s Office - D1/004/19

The Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office has signed an agreement of judicial cooperation with Brazil

A significant part of the drug trade between South America and Europe transits from Brazil through the port of Antwerp. This scourge is easier to combat if the judicial authorities of both countries pool their efforts.

To improve contacts and the effectiveness of cooperation between the Belgian and Brazilian courts, a delegation composed of the Belgian Federal Prosecutor, two members of the Federal Prosecutor's Office and a member of the Antwerp Prosecutor's Office travelled to Brasilia (Brazil) to sign a memorandum of understanding.

An agreement preceded by several months of work and negotiations between the Belgian Federal Prosecutor's Office, the liaison officer of the Belgian Federal Police in Brazil and the Brazilian judicial authorities.

The Belgian Federal Prosecutor and the Brazilian General Prosecutor therefore signed the cooperation agreement between the two countries on Tuesday 18 March 2019 in Brasilia.

In addition to joint action against drug trafficking, this document provides for the extension of mutual efforts, in particular to the fight against organized crime, terrorism and computer or economic crime.

Particular emphasis will be placed on the exchange of information between the two countries.
